The once prominent “Disco Kroger” shopping center that sits on the corner of Montrose and Westheimer was purchase by Skanska for $27 million in 2020 as that prized 3-acre tract now awaits development.
This project is dubbed “Skanska Montrose” by the community.
The 3 acre property used to house Kroger for 42 years, Half-Price Books and Spec’s liquor store was demolished in 2021 after the acquisition.
The Players
Skanska USA Commercial Development is part of Skanska AB, a multinational consturction and development company based in Sweden. Some of the prominent projects include MetLife Stadium in NY, renovation of headquarters of United Nations in DC to Bank of America Tower in downtown Houston.
Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) was the anchor tenant at the property. The company said the decision to close the store “was very difficult and was only made as a last resort.”

Skanska Commercial Development purchase 2.87 acre Montrose property for $27M. The property housed a 44,000-square-foot shopping center that dates back to 1937 when it opened as the Tower Community Center, with Kroger Grocer the anchor tenant.
Jan 2021
Kroger, also known as “Disco Kroger” by the LGBQT community moved out the shopping center, as reported by the Houston Business Journal.
March 2021
Demolition begins. The Houston Chronicle reported that demolition begins and no details were provided when they inquired about the land usage.
Summer 2021 – current
Through some agreement, Skanska is working with Curb Coalition and the coalition is utilizing that lot at 1001 Westheimer as a pop-up weekend market and night market. Events are still planned as of Nov/Dec 2021.
